The Lean Enterprise Institute, Inc. founded by James P. Womack in 1997, is a nonprofit education, publishing, research, and

conference organization. Compared with traditional “think” tanks, we are a “do” tank. We carefully develop hypotheses about lean thinking and experiment to see which approaches work best in the real world. We then write about and teach what we discover, providing new methods for organizational transformation.

We have a very simple objective at LEI. We try to describe in plain language the fundamental ideas of lean thinking. We have derived these from Toyota, which derived many of them in turn from Henry Ford’s breakthroughs at Highland Park early in the 20th Century.

We diffuse these ideas through our website lean.org, books, workbooks, workshops, training packages, learning events at customer sites, and Lean Summits. Also, we conduct research projects and support other lean initiatives such as the Lean Education Academic Network, the Lean Global Network, and the Healthcare Value Network.

We are located in the Kendall Square area of Cambridge, MA, one of the most rapidly developing districts of the city. Our office building is in close proximity to public transportation, MIT, shops, and restaurants. It has a great open-office environment, state-of the art gym, and a parking lot right next to the building.

Position
The Education value stream within LEI is one of three core lines of business, along with Learning Materials, and Lean Summits and Conferences. Our Education business consists of open enrollment workshops which we offer across North America (8-9 sessions a year), workshops that we conduct in our office in Cambridge, MA, and customized learning events at customer facilities.

Until now, all types of workshops have been handled by 2 people – Director of Education and Education Coordinator. However, due to the rapid expansion of our connections with individual organizations seeking help on many different levels – from a one-time delivery of our workshops at their sites to the development of complex, highly customized, long-term learning processes, sometimes on a global scale – we decided to add another member to our Education Team to run this line of business.

As Education Manager, you will be responsible for all aspects of our in-house education business focusing on the development of long-term relationships with customers. It will allow LEI to provide effective learning support to our customers while gathering information for research projects that are used to develop new education programs, publications, case studies, etc.

Education Manager will:
• Be the first point of contact for any individual or organization seeking help with on-site training;
• Work with LEI faculty to identify the needs of prospective customers and make recommendations on the learning content/format that best suits the needs of each individual customer;
• Write proposals and prepare other documentation needed to support every project;
• Work with LEI faculty to edit or create materials for each project;
• Be responsible for printing & shipping materials to customer sites, as well as handle all other logistics issues relative to this line of business;
• Attend at least one workshop at a customer site per quarter to observe the process first-hand, get customer feedback, and identify areas for improvement;
• Conduct reflection sessions – in person or over the phone – with every customer and make process improvements as needed;

In addition to the responsibilities associated with the execution of onsite learning programs, the Education Manager will:

• Work closely with Director of Education and Education Coordinator on the identification of process improvement opportunities in other lines of Education business;
• Participate in the development of annual business plans for his/her line of business and the entire Education value stream;
• Attend at least two sessions of public workshops and one major LEI event annually in order to continuously develop relationships with customers and LEI faculty, and better understand the overall LEI business.

What You Bring to the Table as a Candidate

A successful candidate must offer:

• Excellent understanding of the key principles of lean and some experience applying them in any kind of an organization.
• Experience in teaching lean workshops and/or providing coaching support. Knowledge of LEI workshops and programs is a major plus.
• Deep experience in working with customers (external or internal), including executive and senior management, to understand their needs and expectations, develop curricula and effectively organize learning events;
• Solid knowledge of instructional design and expertise to assist LEI Faculty with workshop material development;
• Strong project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines;
• Great ability and desire to work collaboratively with other members of the LEI team;
• Passion for continuous improvement of all processes and practices within his/her area of responsibility.
• Flexibility to travel 25-30% of the time.

Position
The new Director, Operational Excellence will join Coca-Cola’s select, hands-on Operational Excellence team as a Master (Lean) OpEx Practitioner, personally designing, facilitating and implementing Lean systems on a global scale company-wide. The Director will lead the charge in major transformations of key business units, venture partners, and possibly customer or vendor organizations, as circumstances may require. Transformation initiatives will typically be identified at the C-level, and organizations undergoing transformation will be dedicating significant financial and senior people resources to create and sustain their optimal Lean Operational Excellence system and culture.

The position reports to a Senior Director, OpEx, who in turn reports to the company’s VP, Global Operations. The Director, OpEx will travel internationally about 75% of the time, while working in Atlanta, GA for the remainder. Relocation preferred but optional for now.

Requirements

We seek a highly experienced Lean Leader (Toyota Management System/Toyota Way) who has most likely dedicated at least the last 10 to 15 years to driving and delivering continuous improvement results by implementing Lean systems in complex, international, matrix environments.  Strong supply-chain, manufacturing or wholesale/retail distribution operations management experience would serve as good background for helping understand The Coca-Cola Company’s diverse and challenging operating environment.

Critical Mission

Our client’s new Director, Continuous Improvement (Director CI) will take full responsibility for developing an effective CI program which provides tools, techniques and resources to support the organization’s efforts to significantly improve Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost.              

Specific Responsibilities

·        Provide the organization with standard CI tools and techniques for analysis, quantification, prioritization and realization of sustained performance improvements in the areas of Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost.

·        Refine CI program design (i.e., philosophy and approach) as needed to ensure alignment with company’s business strategy and accelerated results that are sustained over time.

·        Oversee the professional development of CI team members and refine the capability building process as needed to provide distinctive CI expertise that fully supports the organization’s improvement efforts.

·        Partner with Operations/Supply Chain leaders to develop annual CI Objectives, Strategies and Plans (OSP’s) and then to create revised quarterly plans based on the results and business needs.

·        Ensure proper communication methods are utilized to create a shared CI mindset across the organization and reinforce basic CI principles, highlight Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) versus goals, share best practices and celebrate individual/team successes.

·        Counsel organization leaders (e.g., product development, sales, marketing, etc…) on developing effective CI program within their business area by creating a tailored approach that adapts CI tools/techniques to fit each function’s operation.

·        Lead improvement projects and/or activities each year that deliver significant sustained annual savings

Requirements

·        Bachelor of Science (preferably technical field, e.g., engineering), MBA optional.

·        Experience applying improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, 6 Sigma, TPM, etc…) to different operating environments (e.g., continuous flow process, warehouses, suppliers, “back” office, etc…)

·        Expertise in leading the design, launch and roll-out of a corporate improvement program.

·        Ability to build effective CI teams with distinctive CI capabilities.

·        Ability to orchestrate change across the supply chain and within a multi-site plant network.

·        Strong expertise in Lean Manufacturing  (Toyota Production System) and/or Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).

·        Demonstrated skills as effective problem solver, strong communicator (oral & written), advanced operations analyst (e.g., labor, equipment, etc…)

Position Summary

Our Director, Lean Six Sigma Consulting will ideally reside in the Metro New York, Atlanta, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago or Scottsdale regions, or within any major metro area easily accessible to a hub airport.  He or she will travel regularly across the United States (some international travel possible) to client locations. Our Director, Lean Six Sigma Consulting will be responsible for managing client relationships and the Lean/Sigma work engagements that result from those relationships, from project beginning onward. Our Director will be hands-on in driving projects, applying Lean and Six Sigma techniques to analyze client/project operational and financial metrics, developing project execution plans and targets, and supporting overall execution of client engagements.

Responsibilities

·        Work closely with the client to analyze both operational processes and financial metrics of the client to assess project opportunities that positively impact the financial performance of the client business

·        Develop and implement the roll out the execution plan with emphasis on yielding multiple ROI for the client

·        Provide Lean training, facilitate Kaizen Events and provide follow-up to drive operational improvements

·        Mentor and coach others in the use of Lean tools on assessments, operational analysis and implementation of lean methods

·        Ensure that the work provided is consistent with the firm’s domain expertise and beliefs and is delivered with high-impact, tangible results

·        Support the firm’s activity in developing new business and developing intellectual property.

·        Extensive travel to client locations; international travel possible

Requirements

·        Minimum of five years of direct LEAN experience and at least two years of SIX SIGMA experience in a manufacturing environment and preferably a transactional environment (financial services, airlines, etc.).

·        Ability to clearly quantify project metrics/results in terms of hard savings, soft savings and non-financial improvements.

·        Three-plus years of prior consulting experience in a management consulting firm preferred. 

·        Five years of operational leadership experience in a large manufacturing or transactional corporation required.  Internal consulting experience for a recognized leader in Lean/Six Sigma (LSS) methodologies preferred.

·        Direct experience leading multiple kaizen events and Six Sigma quality-based projects.

·        Hands-on experience leading LEAN events in LEAN tools areas including setup reduction, TPM, standard work, etc.  Strong preference for experience in value stream design and plant re-design. 

·        MBA preferred, engineering or business undergraduate degree required
