Our client is a small (under $100 million) world-class, multi-national manufacturer of specialty metal products.

Based in the Western United States, the company designs and builds unique, custom solutions which are specifically engineered to individual customer order (high-mix, low-volume) and sold through multiple channels in the defense/military, aerospace, and industrial markets. Primary operations are located in a major Mountain State metro area and the company also serves some of its international customers from a secondary European plant. Our client is owned by a U.S.-based private equity firm and is very well-positioned for substantial growth over the coming years.

The company’s seasoned management team believes strongly in Lean manufacturing which is at the core of the company’s operating philosophy. During the past three years our client has implemented continuous improvement principles and practices with strong support from all levels of the organization. Substantial progress has been made. However, in order to support the opportunity for market growth, the company still needs to address persistent service level issues in its manufacturing operations, and must also improve throughput capacity to meet rising demand volumes.

Reporting directly to the company’s President, the VP Operations will serve as strategic and tactical business partner and change agent on the company’s top leadership team. The VP Operations will participate in establishing (and delivering on) the organization’s strategic plans and critical success factors.

Why You Want this Position

Create an immediate, significant and highly-visible impact on the operations of a dynamic and rapidly evolving private industrial manufacturing company.

Imprint your creativity and passion on an already-world-class business by taking hands-on leadership role to improve strategy and tactical execution to support business requirements and results.

Drive the organization’s LEAN cultural transformation across all areas of operations based on your well-developed Toyota Production System (or derivative business system) experience.

Enjoy personal recognition for your achievements, and excellent financial rewards including equity participation in the company’s success.

Key Responsibilities

The VP Operations is responsible for all day-to-day operating functions including production control (scheduling and material), manufacturing engineering, production, quality, tool shop, maintenance and procurement. The VP will lead these activities through department managers via effective planning, staffing, training, budgeting and prioritizing throughout the organization. Key peers include vice presidents of sales, engineering and finance, who form the core of the executive leadership team.

Factors which will be critical to the success of the person in this position :

Demonstrated track record in sustaining high service (on time delivery) and quality levels in a job shop mixed-mode manufacturing environment.

Direct experience in the successful execution of the production control function including deployment and utilization of advanced ERP and scheduling.

Previous sustained success in driving continuous improvement in a high variety / low volume manufacturing environment.

Expertise in improving product engineering/planning, and process definition handoff to manufacturing.

What You Bring to the Table

Strategic thinking and execution, with the experience and judgment to plan and accomplish operating objectives, within a job shop mixed-mode manufacturing environment, supported by…

Education Manager, LEI, Cambridge, MA

Organization Background
The Lean Enterprise Institute, Inc. founded by James P. Womack in 1997, is a nonprofit education, publishing, research, and

Jim Womack

conference organization. Compared with traditional “think” tanks, we are a “do” tank. We carefully develop hypotheses about lean thinking and experiment to see which approaches work best in the real world. We then write about and teach what we discover, providing new methods for organizational transformation.

We have a very simple objective at LEI. We try to describe in plain language the fundamental ideas of lean thinking. We have derived these from Toyota, which derived many of them in turn from Henry Ford’s breakthroughs at Highland Park early in the 20th Century.

We diffuse these ideas through our website lean.org, books, workbooks, workshops, training packages, learning events at customer sites, and Lean Summits. Also, we conduct research projects and support other lean initiatives such as the Lean Education Academic Network, the Lean Global Network, and the Healthcare Value Network.

Great Location
We are located in the Kendall Square area of Cambridge, MA, one of the most rapidly developing districts of the city. Our office building is in close proximity to public transportation, MIT, shops, and restaurants. It has a great open-office environment, state-of the art gym, and a parking lot right next to the building.

Outstanding Team
We are a small but very effective team of 14 who accomplish a lot because we consistently apply PDCA thinking to everything we do. We work together on most of our projects to ensure the delivery of maximum value to our customers.

Why YOU should be here!
By joining our team, you become a member of the flagship for the global Lean Community and will work side-by-side with LEI’s founder Jim Womack and our CEO John Shook, world-renowned writers, Lean Thinkers, and sensei, recognized for their invaluable contribution in advancing lean thinking around the world.

LEI faculty are another great source of learning and inspiration. All our instructors have years of experience implementing lean in all sorts of organizations, and every meeting with them leads to learning something new.

Through our workshops, events and website, you will be exposed to hundreds of companies and organizations all around the globe, and will be able to make a positive impact helping them improve their processes and develop their management teams. Everything you’ll do will matter a lot!

Finally, as part of the LEI family, you’ll be constantly contributing to shaping our strategy while doing your daily work in a very positive, collaborative, and high-energy environment.

Position
The Education value stream within LEI is one of three core lines of business, along with Learning Materials, and Lean Summits and Conferences. Our Education business consists of open enrollment workshops which we offer across North America (8-9 sessions a year), workshops that we conduct in our office in Cambridge, MA, and customized learning events at customer facilities.

Until now, all types of workshops have been handled by 2 people – Director of Education and Education Coordinator. However, due to the rapid expansion of our connections with individual organizations seeking help on many different levels – from a one-time delivery of our workshops at their sites to the development of complex, highly customized, long-term learning processes, sometimes on a global scale – we decided to add another member to our Education Team to run this line of business.

As Education Manager, you will be responsible for all aspects of our in-house education business focusing on the development of long-term relationships with customers. It will allow LEI to provide effective learning support to our customers while gathering information for research projects that are used to develop new education programs, publications, case studies, etc.

Education Manager will:
• Be the first point of contact for any individual or organization seeking help with on-site training;
• Work with LEI faculty to identify the needs of prospective customers and make recommendations on the learning content/format that best suits the needs of each individual customer;
• Write proposals and prepare other documentation needed to support every project;
• Work with LEI faculty to edit or create materials for each project;
• Be responsible for printing & shipping materials to customer sites, as well as handle all other logistics issues relative to this line of business;
• Attend at least one workshop at a customer site per quarter to observe the process first-hand, get customer feedback, and identify areas for improvement;
• Conduct reflection sessions – in person or over the phone – with every customer and make process improvements as needed;

In addition to the responsibilities associated with the execution of onsite learning programs, the Education Manager will:

• Work closely with Director of Education and Education Coordinator on the identification of process improvement opportunities in other lines of Education business;
• Participate in the development of annual business plans for his/her line of business and the entire Education value stream;
• Attend at least two sessions of public workshops and one major LEI event annually in order to continuously develop relationships with customers and LEI faculty, and better understand the overall LEI business.

What You Bring to the Table as a Candidate

A successful candidate must offer:

• Excellent understanding of the key principles of lean and some experience applying them in any kind of an organization.
• Experience in teaching lean workshops and/or providing coaching support. Knowledge of LEI workshops and programs is a major plus.
• Deep experience in working with customers (external or internal), including executive and senior management, to understand their needs and expectations, develop curricula and effectively organize learning events;
• Solid knowledge of instructional design and expertise to assist LEI Faculty with workshop material development;
• Strong project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines;
• Great ability and desire to work collaboratively with other members of the LEI team;
• Passion for continuous improvement of all processes and practices within his/her area of responsibility.
• Flexibility to travel 25-30% of the time.

Compensation
Competitive salary is commensurate with the candidate’s experience and skills. LEI offers a great benefit package, including medical and dental insurance, company contributions to a 401K plan, financial support for individual training and development, etc.

Contact
Please contact LEI Director of Education Olga Flory with your questions or to submit your qualifications: E-mail: oflory@lean.org Tel: 617-871-2946

Expertise: Asia, Europe, China, International, Lean Distribution, Lean Supply Chain, Lean Logistics, Lean Supplier Development, Lean Operations Planning, Lean Manufacturing, Lean Sales

Client: (Confidential) High-Tech Consumer Electronic Products

Start: Immediate

Location: Cupertino, (Silicon Valley), California

Comp: Excellent first year total package includes base salary, significant sign-on bonus, and equity (stock) award

Position Overview

Global travel, complex distribution and customer service solutions, supply chain and supplier development activities, sales and operations planning; and a piece of the action (equity)…

Our client is an immensely creative and innovative research and development company which just seems to come up with brilliant ideas for some of the neatest high-tech electronic gadgets on planet Earth. You already know who they are, though you may not know them by name. Why not give some thought to joining the team?

The company designs and engineers high-profile, portable, hand-held consumer electronics products which are known and loved pretty much everywhere. Why? Because they have a whole bunch of very smart and dedicated people on board who love the excitement of thinking cutting-edge thoughts and doing leading-edge work.

Now, it so happens that these folks also do an excellent job of listening to their customers and then translating customer wishes and dreams into real-world, useful technology. Then they wow the world by delivering this technology in packages that demonstrate real value because they’re fun, easy-to-use and highly-reliable. That’s why.

The company’s rapid growth globally has created the need for one or two especially talented Lean practitioners to jump into vital and visible value stream improvement roles. Is it possible that you could be that right person, at the right time and in the right place? If you’re already smart, inspired and Lean, well, why not give it a shot? Find out more…

Position Detail – The Role

•Act as lead change-agent, systematically driving continuous improvement (CI) throughout the organization and its global logistics and distribution/fulfillment organization, or supply chain and supplier development group, or operations planning units

You

Thoroughly enjoy dealing with fast-paced, challenging and often “impossible” situations, and thrive on solving them

Effectively manage multiple complex ideas, issues and initiatives simultaneously, and consistently deliver over and above expectations

Earned a BS/BA in engineering or other technical field, and most likely added an MA/MBA

Travel – you should expect to travel as necessary, between the US and Europe, the UK and Asia, as well as domestically

Compensation – Excellent base salary, sign-on bonus and equity award at sign-on and subsequently in future.

Other - We’re particularly interested in Lean executives with experience in environments such as consumer electronics, telecommunications, portable electronics, mobile electronics, hand-held devices, and similar. So, it’s probable that alumni of Microsoft (Xbox?); Sony; Dell; HP; Cisco; Intel; Flextronics; Nokia; Motorola; RIM, and those countless other dedicated organizations driving Lean transformations throughout their global operations, might be a perfect fit. Obviously, a Toyota Production System background with consumer electronics experience would be an ideal combination. And of course, if your resume demonstrates successes at Lean innovators such as Toyota, NUMMI, Danaher, United Technologies, and – well you get the picture – all the better. You know who you are.

Also, we have a strong interest in individuals who have earned the LFM – LGO (Leaders for Manufacturing, now called Leaders for Global Operations) degree at MIT, or similar top educational institution.

We’re looking for an experienced Six Sigma leader with broad business acumen, global perspective and experience, and the ability to drive, facilitate and sustain change in a fast-paced, highly entrepreneurial environment.

The selected individual will become our client’s Director, Global Six Sigma, and leverage her or his outstanding leadership, communications and technical skills to create significant and lasting impact and value at all levels of this organization.

And yes, it’s going to take an ambitious, determined and committed “A-player” to reap the rewards of success in this demanding role. But what business transformation worthy of that designation wouldn’t be a major problem-solving opportunity, and a challenge of such caliber that it rigorously tests the mettle of even the best Six Sigma pros in today’s competitive manufacturing world?

Could you be up to this challenge?

The Position
If you’re the right person for this position it’s going to be pretty obvious to us both that you’ve already done a lot of this once or twice before. Negotiated, developed and set company-wide improvement objectives and goals. Led the corporate and site-level strategy and tactical teams. Championed and facilitated DMAIC and DFSS initiatives. Developed and led the Black Belt project teams. Built and tracked metrics, and then improved, rebuilt and retracked them again. Trained, coached, counseled. And demonstrated that you, individually and together with the teams you led, could deliver the goods.

So, why then, might this position interest an expert like you? Why could this be the right “next step” in building your career? And why must you take a closer look?

Here’s Why

Company Background

Our client is a leading global Tier Two supplier to the automotive industry, as well as a supplier to USA broader industrial and medical markets. With revenues of approximately $500 million and over 2500 employees worldwide, the company has five manufacturing facilities in the US, two in the UK, and one in France. China is next. A private company, our client is owned by a major New York-based private equity firm which also holds controlling or significant minority interests in companies around the world that generate over $60 billion in annual revenues.

Conclusions -

You experience top management visibility and impact opportunity in a business that’s a size you can really get your hands around

You do hands-on international management in Europe and Asia

You receive exposure to private equity management issues and build direct understanding of how private investor-owned business leadership works

You have a shot at career growth opportunities here and also within other portfolio companies

Real-World Six Sigma Commitment

This company is about Six Sigma Quality in everything it does. Perfection is the target. They understand that conformity and consistency are critical to their customers. Every associate is involved in the pursuit of Quality and continually strives for excellence and ways to pass cost savings to the customer. Manufacturing Excellence is delivered through:

Philosophy of Lean Enterprise

Focus on process efficiencies through Six Sigma techniques

Real-time data for real-time decision making

Cost-down and cost-out culture throughout the organization

Conclusions –

You already have the core corporate support you need for your Six Sigma success

You won’t need to reinvent the Six Sigma wheel; build on the foundation, and make it even better, and take it to the next level

You’ll develop the business skill sets and senses to drive Lean Six Sigma at broader and deeper operational and executive levels

Opportunity

“Best people” is where it all begins. Our client’s commitment to quality, innovation, sales and service begins with their people (possible you?). Attracting and retaining talent is key to the company’s success, and because they want only the best, they deliver exactly that in return: competitive compensation, a healthy benefit package, additional opportunity for rewards, and always career growth possibilities.

Conclusions – Please draw your own. And if you are indeed among the best-in-class Six Sigma practitioners today, perhaps an image of your possible next step on the career ladder is already forming in your mind.

Some Additional Details

The position of Director, Six Sigma reports to a company Vice President who is personally very strong and hands-on in continuous improvement, and also holds other major operational responsibilities within the business. He in turn, works directly for the CEO, who has also been personally and directly (Gemba level) involved in Six Sigma and Lean throughout his career. You’ll be in good company.

The position is based on the Southeastern Coast of the US in a college town which is also known for its attractive seaside resort areas. Lifestyle is appropriate to the setting with scenic beaches and seafood abounding, and with ample cultural, educational and entertainment opportunities available as well.

Travel should amount to no more than 50%, and a good portion of that would be considered local (not necessarily over night).

Requirements

You’ll need to be a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt from a recognized program, with at least a BS/BA in Engineering from a top university (an MBA would weigh strongly in your favor).

We’d like to see a minimum of 10 years Six Sigma operations improvement leadership experience with proven results, leading major change initiatives (multiple Black Belts, multiple locations, globally).

You must also show a few years of hands-on operations (manufacturing) or plant management experience at some point in your career. While some consulting background could be beneficial, our ideal candidate will most likely have built the bulk of his or her expertise while excelling as an internal agent of change.

Finally, you should genuinely believe in change, continuous improvement and growth, both professionally and personally.

Connect with Us

Please connect with me in whatever way is most convenient for you. We share no information about you with anyone outside our firm until we’ve agreed on this with you.

No resume? That’s OK. If you feel very strongly that you meet all our criteria, let’s talk first. Call me…
